Career Overview: The Flaming Lips
Embryonic, The Flaming Lips 12th album, is coming out this year. It seems like a perfect time to look back at the best albums The Flaming Lips have recorded and released so far. These are their best seven (in chronological order) to date. Will Embryonic replace one of these?
In a Priest Driven Ambulance (1990) – For some Lips fans this is still their greatest album. While I personally don’t personally have that belief, you are a noise rock fanatic then you may have that opinion too. If you are new to the band and have been brought into the fold by some of their more recent albums then you may find this one a bit difficult to listen to at first, but I recommend giving it at least a few spins to give it a fair shot because there’s some great songs on this album.
Hit to Death in the Future Head (1992) – This may be The Lips most underrated album. It’s got a lot of real gems on it. To me this was the Lips moving away from noise just to be making noise and towards something more experimental and interesting.
Transmission from the Satellite Heart (1993) – This is probably the Lips most overrated album because it has their most overrated song, “She Don’t Use Jelly,” on it. It’s still a great album though because a lot of the other songs are very good.
Clouds Taste Metallic (1995) – Clouds… takes the direction of their previous ’90s albums and makes good on all of the promise. I think it’s their best album of this type (noisy psychedelic pop-rock.) After this album they would start moving in an entirely different direction, in large part due to lead guitarist Ronald Jones leaving the band.
Zaireeka (1997) – You can only listen to Zaireeka as intended by playing all four CDs on four different CD players simultaneously. But there are a lot of mix-down versions of the album “out there” that gives some approximation of the experience.
The Soft Bulletin (1999) – The most perfect Lips album to date in my opinion. I think it’s easily among the greatest albums of the 1990s. A modern day classic that should be heard by anyone who takes “pop music” seriously.
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002) – This was an exciting new direction in 2002. Sadly I think the Lips overplayed this hand with 2006’s At War with the Mystics which is, in my opinion, the worst Lips album since the “bad old days” of the 1980s.
