The Remarkable Magician With X-Ray Vision - March 17th, 2010
This is a great rick that relies on a little bit of skill, and some good story telling. In this trick you will convince an audience of surprised strangers or friends of your amazing X-ray abilities. You will be showing them your amazing ability to look through an entire deck of cards, and read the precise card on the bottom.
This is how the ploy will materialize to your soon to be fortuitously amazed audience. You pull out a usual deck of cards, and elucidate to one and all that you have developed X-ray vision. You spread the deck of cards out, so they can perceive the bottom card, and you can’t. You show the tremendous strength of your X-ray vision by staring through the deck and reading the card on the bottom.
Then you shut your eyes, and move the card that is on top, to the bottom. Then you open our eyes again, and watchfully stare through the entire stack of cards, and read the card on the bottom. The stunned crowd looks on in shocked silence. You replicate this for every single cards, and by then every person in the crowd, even the harshest skeptics will be impressively convinced of your X-ray powers.
Here’s how do to do the trick. Take a standard pack of cards, and flip the top card over, so that it is facing up. Then flip the deck around, so the audience sees that card. They will deduce it is the bottom card, and that the rest of the cards are facing the same way. So while you are holding the deck facing out, they are looking at what they assume is the bottom card, and you are looking at what they suspect is the face down top card, when in truth you are simply looking at the next card, which is face up.
This can take some preparation. Many desire to start this trick out by cutting the deck a few times, taking a peek at the bottom card, and then quickly putting in on top while telling some engaging story. Others choose to hold the deck behind their backs as they do this. The most important part is to keep chatting, and keep the audience busy. While this trick is pretty remarkable, it’s also simple to spot if somebody is trying to catch you in the act.
One way to steer clear of discovery is to act as if you aren’t utterly sure of the card. Act as if your X-ray vision isn’t that calibrated, and miss a few cards, but not by much. For instance, instead of calling the Queen of Hearts, call out the Queen of Diamonds. Instead of calling out the Ace of Spades, call out the Aces of Clubs. And pretend like you are really trying to see the cards. If you do a good enough job of acting, they will be more worried with you getting the right answer, rather than how you are pulling off this extremely humbling trick. Have fun with this.
